Originally from Houston, Texas, John Thomey is a senior student at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. Believing in the undeniable connection between public policy and communications, John is pursuing a degree in Public Relations while also minoring in both, Political Science and Information Management and Technology.
John has always had a high interest in the American Political System. This interest drove him to intern on a U.S. congressional campaign in the fall of his sophomore year. Despite his candidate losing, this experience taught John that communicating about passionate beliefs is the most fun way to communicate. John hopes to work on future election campaigns, where he can use his unique communication skills and political knowledge to work to support candidates and platforms he believes.
John worked as an intern with the Office of Senator Kirsten Gillibrand. John worked out of the Central New York Regional Office for the Senator. The experience brought new challenges every day and taught him the pragmatic mindset required when working for an elected official and dealing with constituents.
This past summer, John worked as an intern on the Corporate & Strategy team at W2O Group, an intergrated marketing and communications firm. Gaining experience in both internal and external communications while working on client accounts, John in the processed learned how to use analytics to efficentely and effectively solve organizational problems.
Since he was a high school student, John has dedicated himself to community and public service. While in high school, John mentored younger students who had been identified as at risk students. During his freshman year of college, John was a member of the student organization OrangeSeeds. As a member, John reached out to community organizations to help plan the largest student organized day of community service at Syracuse University. John has also spent time during college as a peer advisor for a pre-orientation program for incoming freshman at Syracuse. The pre-orientation program revolves around community service as a way to introduce freshman to Syracuse. Public service has always been a passion of John’s, and is a passion he hopes to incorporate into a career as a communication professional.
While not in class or interning, John enjoys sports and working out. Throughout his time at Syracuse University, John has worked as an Undergraduate Teaching Assistant and is an active member of PRSSA.
